Quoting Shakespeare

If you cannot understand my argument, and declare “It's Greek to me”, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you claim to be more sinned against than sinning, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you recall your salad days, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you act more in sorrow than in anger; if your wish is farther to the thought; if your lost property has vanished into thin air, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you have ever refused to budge an inch or suffered from green-eyed jealousy, if you have played fast and loose, if you have been tongue-tied, a tower of strength, hoodwinked or in a pickle, if you have knitted your brows, made a virtue of necessity, insisted on fair play, slept not one wink, stood on ceremony, danced attendance on your lord and master, laughed yourself into stitches, had short shrift, cold comfort or too much of a good thing, if you have seen better days or lived in a fool's paradise -why, be that as it may, the more fool you, for it is a foregone conclusion that you are as good luck would have it quoting Shakespeare; if you think it is early days and clear out bag and baggage, if you think it is high time and that that is the long and short of it, if you believe that the game is up and that truth will out even if it involves your own flesh and blood, if you lie low till the crack of doom because you suspect foul play, if you have your teeth set on edge (at one fell swoop) without rhyme or reason, then - to give the devil his due - if the truth were known for surely you have a tongue in your head you are quoting Shakespeare; even if you bid me good riddance and send me packing, if you wish I was dead as a door-nail, if you think I am an eyesore, a laughing stock, the devil incarnate, a stony-hearted villain, bloody-minded or a blinking idiot, then - by Jove! O Lord! Tut tut! For goodness' sake! What the dickens! But me no buts! - it is all one to me, for you are quoting Shakespeare.

Los consejos del mago Merlín

Estos días, revolviendo papeles, encontré algo interesante (creo que era de alguna antigua clase) que he leído y releído varias veces por lo bonito de su contenido. Se llamaba “Los Consejos del Mago Merlín”. ¿Quién era este personaje?. Nunca me había preocupado ni había sentido interés por saberlo, pero estos consejos despertaron mi curiosidad.

Se cree que nació en Gales en el siglo VI y que formó parte de los caballeros del Rey Arturo. La leyenda es muy amplia y hay diversidad de opiniones de cómo nació o vivió. Pero me pregunto: ¿cómo un ser mitológico o de ficción ha podido influir tanto en la historia de la literatura? Infinidad de autores han escrito sobre él, hay gran cantidad de literatura infantil y también ha sido llevado al cine. Magos de todos los tiempos le han tenido como ejemplo a seguir y ha sido de gran influencia para ellos.

Su personalidad es tan variada como sus disciplinas y habilidades: rey, guerrero, sabio, astrónomo, profeta, anacoreta…

A continuación os escribo dichos consejos que creo que merece la pena leerlos y que cada uno saque sus conclusiones:

CONSEJOS DEL MAGO MERLÍN

Lo mejor cuando se está triste- contestó Merlín, empezando a soplar y resoplar- es aprender. Puedes hacerte viejo y temblón, puedes pasarte toda la noche desvelado escuchando el desorden de tu cuerpo, puedes perder tu único amor, ver el mundo devastado por malvados lunáticos, o saber que tu honor está enfangado en los basureros de las mentes ruines. Sólo hay una salida en ese caso: aprender.
Aprender por qué se mueve el mundo y qué lo mueve. Eso es lo único que el pensamiento no puede agotar ni enajenar, lo que nunca le torturará , lo que nunca temerá, lo que nunca le causará desconfianza, lo que ni en sueños podrá lamentar. Eso es lo más conveniente para ti: aprender.
Considera todas las cosas que puedes aprender: ciencia pura, la única pureza que existe. Puedes aprender astronomía en una vida, historia natural en tres, literatura en seis.
Y puedes luego, tras haber agotado un millón de vidas en la biología y en la medicina y la teosofía y la geografía y la historia y la economía, puedes, en fin, empezar a hacer una rueda de carreta con la madera adecuada, o pasar cincuenta años iniciando el aprendizaje de la técnica de derrotar en esgrima al adversario.
Después puedes empezar de nuevo con la matemática, hasta que llegue el día, el momento, en que aprendas a arar.
